Breaking Through Complexity

We live in a world where complexity is increasing at an exponential rate, and many company executives are bewildered by this phenomenon. Working on the inside of the enterprise they attempt to reduce complexity in order to make their management task, easier. The paradox is that these interventions often make matters worse, and at best are no more than guesswork.

Our approach to complexity reduction is to work from the ‘outside-in’, reducing complexity in the marketplace first, through clever re-segmentation of customers, and then reverse-engineering this enhanced condition back through the business. We are also proponents of ‘Ashby’s Law of Requisite Variety’, and for this reason we are continually on the look-out for sophisticated mechanisms to counter increasing complexity. In this contest we often use ‘Network Optimization Modelling’ techniques to map and uncover optimal pathways through complex supply chain networks at the company and industry level.
